FRIENDS FROM THE OTHER SIDE

Amigos Del Otro Lado

About

Anzaldúa’s first bilingual children’s book, this story explores Prietita’s friendship with Joaquín, a young boy who, with his mother, crossed the Rio Grande River to Texas in search of a new life. Prietita defends Joaquín from her cousin and other neighborhood kids who taunt the young child with shouts of “mojado” or “wetback;” helps protect him from the Border Patrol; and introduces him to the local curandera. As in much of her other writing, here we see Anzaldúa emphasizing the importance of bridge work, compassion, and community.
